Becoming a New Member

The three classes required for membership, also known as the Catechumenate, include:

Introduction to Anglicanism:

Introduction to Anglicanism is a 5 week introduction to the history, doctrine, and life of the Anglican Church. A series of presentations helps participants become familiar with the liturgical tradition of the Church and The Book of Common Prayer and to appreciate Anglican sacramental theology.

AND

Network:

Network is an experience designed to help each person discover his or her own spiritual gifts so that those gifts can be used in the life of the parish. Having discovered their God-given skills, participants can then become effectively involved in meaningful ministry.

AND

Alpha:

Alpha is a course designed as a practical introduction to the Christian faith, where essential questions such as ”Who is Jesus?” and “How can I be sure of my faith?” will be addressed. Join Father Eric Dudley for eleven weeks of Sunday evening classes from 6:00-8:30 pm. A dinner time is part of the course. To register, visit the Alpha page. Childcare is available upon request.

OR

Simply Christian:

The class Simply Christian will make use of Bishop N.T. Wright’s book Simply Christian and video teaching segments featuring Bishop Wright as well as a discussion guide prepared by Fr. Petty. Topics include God, Jesus and the Coming of God’s Kingdom, Living by the Spirit, Worship, Prayer, The Book God Breathed and Believing and Belonging.

You are eligible for confirmation after completion of two of the three courses.  To apply for confirmation, download St. Peter's Confirmation Form (PDF).

St. Peter's shield - small What is the Catechumenal Process?

The Catechumenal Process is designed to help adults prepare for mature and responsible Christian discipleship and to become fully incorporated into the Body of Christ. The Catechumenate Process also provides quality learning opportunities for adults which will help them to become effective disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Catechumenal Process is a requirement for the following:

  • Adults who are seeking to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism
  • Baptized adults who are seeking to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation
  • Adults who have been baptized and/or confirmed in other churches who seek to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation
  • Adults who have been confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church or the Orthodox Church who seek to be received into the Anglican Church (those confirmed by a bishop in apostolic succession are not re-confirmed but received)
  • Confirmed Anglicans who wish to reaffirm their Confirmation vows

The Catechumenal Process is strongly recommended for the following:

  • Confirmed Anglicans who wish to deepen their knowledge of the Christian faith
  • Any adult who wishes to deepen his or her faith

St. Peter's shield - small Entering into a Communicant Covenant with Christ

Each stage of the Catechumenal Process involves a commitment to enter into a covenant and the whole process culminates with each person entering into a Communicant Covenant (a combination of the Alpha, Introducing Anglicanism and Network Covenants) with Christ through St. Peter's Church. The Covenant process looks like this:

  • Upon completion of Alpha or Simply Christian (Spring 2008), participants who wish to become candidates for Holy Baptism or Confirmation, Reaffirmation, or Reception will enter into a covenant to be involved in some form of on-going Bible study (Acts 2:42, Disciple Bible Study, Adult Sunday School, etc.)

  • Upon completion of Introduction to Anglicanism, participants will enter into a covenant to support financially the ministry of this parish

  • Upon completion of Network, participants will enter into a covenant to be involved in some form of lay ministry.

Prior to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, reaffirming confirmation vows, or being received into the Anglican Church, participants will attend a Confirmation Conference at which they will enter into a Communicant Covenant which involves a commitment to living out the Baptismal Covenant as expressed in The Book of Common Prayer (pp. 304-305).
