July 1, 2010: Summer 2010 Update
July 1, 2010
Dear Friends,
I hope that this letter finds you well as we enter the hottest part of the summer. Now that I have finished my second year at Duke Divinity School and our new life together has slowed down just a little bit, we want to update all of you about what we have been doing over the last year.
In May, Katie Byers-Dent and I were married at St. Peter's Anglican Church in Tallahassee just a week after her graduation from the Divinity School. Things were a bit hectic, but what a way to start a new life together! These were the two crowning moments of a year full of joy. We see our marriage as a gift and it was begun beautifully and with much celebration. We are excited about the ways that God is shaping us to be in ministry together for the rest of our lives, and looking forward to my graduation from Duke in May of 2011. In the meantime, we are working to make Durham our home for the foreseeable future.
My second year at Duke meant diving deeper into subjects like theology, worship and Anglican spirituality. In some ways the courses are harder, but I am learning to submit myself to God through prayer in all circumstances, which makes hard work a joyful thing. In addition to classroom work, I served as an intern with the Divinity School’s chaplain, planning chapel services that shape the worshiping life of our community. Planning worship was a great way for me to feel more connected with the practical aspects of ministry. Over this summer I am completing my second unit of field education, working in pastoral ministry on the staff of Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Raleigh. It is wonderful to be working in an Anglican parish again, and Katie is happy to have me out of the house during the week while she works to find a new job.
In August, I will start my third year of the Master’s of Divinity program at Duke, and while it is hard to predict our future, we trust that in God’s time his will for us will be made clear. For now, this is a wonderful place for us to be together. Please pray for us, both for my final year of seminary and for my ministry at Holy Trinity and beyond. Also pray for Katie as she looks for employment, that God would open the right doors and make a place for her where the work will be meaningful. We know that in all things we submit ourselves to God’s will for us and we trust him completely.
Thank you so much for your prayers and your support during this time of preparation for our future in the Church. We are grateful to have the support of such a strong network of people who continue to bless us with generous and kind gifts of friendship and love. You are in our prayers and we hope we remain in yours. We hope to see all of you again soon and please stay in touch.
Grace and peace to you,
Mike and Katie Boone
Mike Boone
Mike Boone is a fan of good music, the outdoors and Cuban sandwiches. He is what some people would describe as a "high-energy" person, and has a horrible poker face. Favorite conversation topics include the most underrated Florida State Seminole quarterback of the last 15 years (Thad Busby versus Danny Kanell), handshakes over hugs, and the importance of the Eucharist as a reaction to flawed post-Enlightenment political theologies. Mike is the former Director of Youth Ministries.
He is now a first year seminarian at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. His email is michaelrboone@gmail.com
Keep them in your prayers as they follow their call to the Anglican priesthood.

The newly ordained priest in our midst, The Reverend Townsend Waddill, is the preacher and celebrant at all three services Sunday. Join us for cake, lemonade and root beer floats (a Waddill family favorite) on the lawn between the morning services! Father Townsend, Lisa and Benjamin are in the process of moving to Baton Rouge, LA, where he will be the Rector of St. Margaret’s Church. Congratulations!
