The Golden Calf Syndrome: Idolatry Begins with “I”
SERMON SERIES
January 17 - April 25, 2010
In Exodus 32 the people of Israel create their first idol, a golden calf, so as to have a “manageable God”. You don’t have to have a golden calf or any other idol in your living room to be an idolater. Scripture understands idolatry to be the essence of sin, our ingrained tendency to center our lives around things other than God, things that please us and which allow us to make life manageable.
This sermon series looks at some of our favorite objects of worship such as money, sex, success, politics, time, consumerism, relativism and nationalism and will offer cures for overcoming them so that our lives can be centered on what is truly central – God.
